This is the third attempt at a television series based on the film Cruel Intentions (1999)
Chronology
After a nightmarish incident at an elite boarding school, sisters Caroline and Lucien set out to maintain their power and fame by seducing the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. The direct-to-video sequel Cruel Intentions 2 (2000), which starred Amy Adams as Kathryn Merteuil, was originally a scripted TV series before being re-edited into a feature film.
It follows Cruel Intentions (1999)
Gellar later reprised her role as Kathryn in the 2016 NBC pilot Cruel Intentions (2016), which was not ordered to series. With the exception of Sara Silva, who plays CeCe, all of the cast were terribly cast.
That’s not to say that they weren’t decent actors
To say that the acting was subpar is an understatement. But the main characters were definitely not suited to these roles.
It’s not a completely different story
The story was decent, and while it’s clear that these aren’t the same characters as the original film, they’re loosely based on them. They copied certain scenes from the original, like Caroline kissing Annie.
Lucian was supposed to be a sexy character, like Sebastian was, but how Zak Burgess was deemed the right look and actor for the role has been overlooked
Sara Catherine Hook, who plays Caroline, did a decent job playing the bitch, but like Zak and Lucien, they weren’t really “sexy and seductive.” It would have helped if the Cruel Intentions title hadn’t been used in the series, but regardless, these actors and actresses missed the mark.
